SSM’S Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK), Sagroli, Organizes Training to Boost Onion Yield for Farmers in Biloli
Recognizing that regional onion productivity is significantly below the average, with yields of only 50-60 quintals per acre compared to the standard 100 quintals, Dr. Santosh Chavan, Subject Matter Specialist (Horticulture) at Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK), Sagroli, conducted a farmer training program in Chinchala, Biloli. The low yield and limited area under rabi onion cultivation present a challenge, especially since onion is a high-value crop with the potential to provide strong returns for farmers.
The program, attended by 21 farmers, focused on detailed strategies for increasing onion production. Key topics covered included:
• Soil and variety selection: Choosing the right soil and high-yield varieties.
• Nursery preparation and sowing: Best practices for raising a healthy nursery and effective sowing methods and timing.
• Seed treatment: Techniques to protect seeds from diseases and pests.
• Fertilizer management: Efficient and effective nutrient application.
• Disease and pest management: Integrated strategies for controlling pests and diseases.
• Harvesting and storage: Proper techniques to minimize post-harvest losses and ensure product quality.
This initiative aims to equip local farmers with the knowledge and skills necessary to improve their onion cultivation, ultimately leading to higher yields and increased income.
